Women in Agriculture: Rachel Hughes’ Story
Every woman in the industry deserves a pat on the back. Whatever the role, we all work hard. It has been challenging throughout my farming life as a woman—having to push through crowds to be seen by the auctioneer when bidding and adjusting tractor seats when needed!

Being a mother to three children, looking after calves comes as second nature. Taking care of the young and paying attention to detail are essential skills. Farming has always been seen as a man's role, but I'm proud to see that things are changing.

I am the fourth generation on this farm, following in the footsteps of my mother and father (with my mother being the farmer's daughter). I’m proud to be here, enjoying what we do, that’s what matters.

It's long hours, so we must embrace and endure the challenges we face daily. I believe the future is bright for women in farming; with the right attitude and a strong work ethic, success and opportunities will follow. It’s a growing sector with a high demand for good quality, sustainably produced beef.

Working with Warrendale has allowed us to add value to our dairy-cross beef calves, with the slaughter premium at the end being a bonus.

I am extremely proud to work in this industry. It has allowed us to live and raise our family in such a beautiful area. Working outdoors and with animals is both challenging and rewarding.
