Women in Agriculture: Midge & Charlie’s Stories
,,Charlie shares “My grandma’s side of the family were farmers—she did most of the tractor work. Seeing that showed me women belong in agriculture. The idea that women can’t handle machinery or livestock is outdated. We prove that wrong every day! It’s tough at times, but I love it and wouldn’t do anything else. It’s a skill that can take you anywhere in the world!”
Midge affirms “I was introduced to farming by my dad and have never looked back. The industry has become far more inclusive, and women have a lot to offer. My height is just 5 foot which has been a challenge, but I’ve found my ways to adapt. Farming is a rewarding, self-fulfilling career, and I love every part of it. For more women to get involved, education at the grassroots level is key!”

Midge shares “Farming has always felt like home to me. One challenge I’ve faced is my height—I’m only 5 feet tall! But I’ve never let that stop me. The industry is far more inclusive now, and I believe the gender balance will continue to shift. My advice? Go for it! It’s a rewarding career, and there’s nothing better than working with animals and being outdoors.
Working with Warrendale Wagyu has been fantastic. The system is well-structured, making it easier to manage and plan. One misconception I’d love to change is that some farming jobs are just for men—women are just as capable.”
Charlie: “Farming runs in my family—my grandma did most of the tractor work herself. I’ve faced sexism in the industry, but I’ve learned to prove people wrong. Things are improving, and women are now getting more opportunities beyond traditional roles. Social media has been a game-changer in showcasing what we can do.
My advice? Find a supportive boss who helps you progress. Warrendale Wagyu has been great to work with. One misconception I’d love to change is that women can’t do what men can. We prove time and again that we’re just as capable. Farming has been my lifelong dream, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.”
This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating women like Midge and Charlie who showing agriculture is an industry for everyone!
