Heads Up: Farm Safety & Mental Health

About the event

Speakers:
– Jamie Brownrigg, Production Director at Warrendale Wagyu
– James Bannister, Farmer and Farm Safety Campaigner
– Stephanie Berkeley, Farm Safety Foundation

Warrendale is committed to supporting its farmers across all aspects of work and business, including farm safety and wellbeing. This webinar is a chance for a refresher on safe farm practices, to remind us that complacency is often the biggest risk.

We also want to take this opportunity to check in and ensure our farmers know where to turn when life and work become overwhelming. According to the Yellow Wellies “Mind Your Head” campaign, a shocking 95% of farmers under the age of 40 rate poor mental health as the biggest hidden problem faced today. After all, farm safety and mental health go hand-in-hand.

Watch now:

We were joined by Stephanie Berkeley, charity manager of the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies). Stephanie will talk through key refreshers on farm safety.

According to latest HSE figures, 23 farmers and 4 members of the public lost their lives on farms in the UK last year. That accounts for almost 20% of all worker fatalities across all sectors. The HSE also estimates there are over 23,000 cases of long-term ill health and serious injuries to farm workers every year on farms.

Stephanie also looks ahead to the upcoming “Mind Your Head” campaign, and will signpost to the support you, or someone you know, may need now or in the future.

We were also joined by James Bannister, a farm contractor and farm safety ambassador. James lost his left arm after becoming trapped in a potato harvester for over two hours. Despite his life-changing ordeal, James continued to work, eventually setting up JB Farm Services with clients across the North-East. He continues to campaign, fronting Farm Safety Week and regularly speaking about his story.
